2019: Theatre and Travel by the Numbers

A selection of shows from this year...

Here is the statistical post...I stayed up way too late working on this, but I find it so incredibly interesting that I just couldn't stop. Overall my numbers were higher this year in all categories. Theatre wise, it was a good year.

I became obsessed with Beetlejuice and Matilda. I kept forgetting that I hadn't actually already seen Moulin Rouge. I [shockingly] loved the revival of Oklahoma. I finally saw A Chorus Line. I added another Sondheim to my list (Merrily We Roll Along). I saw fourteen shows on Broadway (the numbers below say twelve because I saw Beetlejuice twice and Freestyle Love Supreme did not count for my 'official' count because it was an improv show). I saw both the big Tony winners (Best Play and Best Musical) before they won this year. I saw the most shows in New York this year, which was a first and I hope a trend.

Of the shows I saw this year in the count 52.56% or 41 of 78 were shows I had never seen before. I saw two totally different productions of two shows (Noises Off and The Lifespan of a Fact) and two different casts, though same company, of one (The Best Christmas Pageant Ever). I saw the Broadway production and the junior production of Frozen, plus I saw the play Frozen (which doesn't have nearly as happy an ending as the musical). I had a lot of revisits of old favorites this year. And this was the first big year that all the stuff that I've been seeing on Broadway the last few years has caught up to me and been on tour in Oklahoma and Texas (hence so many repeats). This was also an anniversary year for both Butterfield and Ardmore Little Theatre so they revisited shows from their pasts. For some perspective 44 of the 65 shows (67.69%) I saw in 2018 were new to me.

As I said, it was a good year in theatre. The first show I saw this year was The Prom, which was fantastic and should have run a lot longer, but never fear, it is coming, in movie form, to Netflix in the coming years. One of the songs, We Look To You, a high school principal, who spends his summers traveling to NYC to see shows, is explaining his love of Broadway to a Tony winning actress as an escape. She confuses escape with a distraction and he clarifies: 'A distraction is momentary. An escape helps you heal.' 2019 was a hard year: people I thought would always be there suddenly weren't, people I thought were my tried and true friends showed their true colors, parts of my life that have been constant showed a lack of integrity and I had to distance myself from them, and I had a month long anxiety attack that was the worst I have seen in years; I needed an escape. I needed to heal. I won't lie, during the bad month I couldn't even find joy in theatre. Well, I may have just seen really terrible shows, but I really didn't enjoy them, but I kept plugging on and kept doing the things that I loved and sought out the people and places that would bring me solace. In the end I am here to give you a world of statistics that you probably don't care about. Again, I think it's super interesting, so here you go. :)

ANNUAL DISCLAIMER: I don't say these things to brag about everything I've seen and done as some may think. Some people watch television or sports or read for hours, I don't, I go to shows. I do it in an economical manner, for the most part, and it is my love and my passion. I love to travel, but even more I love to watch shows and support the people I love. It's my life and I'm living it the best way I possibly can. :)

The Rest:
I also went to 15 concerts/showcases, 9 dance recital/shows, and 23 new movies in theatres. I saw one musical twice in Gainesville, one movie twice in theatres, stage managed two shows so there were duplicates there (2 more times and 6 more times) and directed one show (4 more times).

This is a grand total of 140 fine arts related events (not counting movies and shows broadcast over the internet). That is an average of 2.69 fine arts events per week. (You can see the full list here)

I 'go' a lot. I see stuff on my own a lot. I was curious about how much I go alone vs with people. I realized if I was going to count the full 140 things I saw this year I needed to add two more categories: shows worked and school related shows (school concerts, etc.). [I defined "on my own" as shows I entered by myself. There were certainly times that I knew people there or randomly ran into Alfred (all the time!).] Here are those numbers, they may surprise you, they may be on normal track. I think I let people into my world a bit more this year.

Alone: 47.14% (66)
With People: 37.86% (53)
Worked: 10.71% (15)
School Related: 4.29% (6)

Travel:
This was a low travel year. I took full advantage of theatre that was close to me and stayed put a bit more, but still...

I took 8 flights.

I traveled to 3 airports.

2 states (3 if you count Texas, which IS counted in the airport count above)
